When Should You Get a Coolant Flush?

As an Audi owner, you undoubtedly know that your vehicle’s coolant will vary depending on make and model. Driving habits also affect when and how often you should get coolant flushes. If you regularly find yourself in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the I90/I94, I290, I294, or the I80, then your vehicle may require more frequent coolant flushes. If you’ve recently had your vehicle towed, you may also need to schedule a coolant flush with Fletcher Jones Audi sooner than what your owner’s manual recommends.

Generally, you should expect to replace your coolant every 30,000 miles. However, the exact interval for your vehicle could be longer, or shorter. However, if you notice any of these signs, we suggest you schedule an Audi coolant change as soon as possible:

  • your vehicle regularly overheats

  • coolant leaks from your vehicle (greenish puddle of fluid under your engine)

  • an unusual sweet smell from your engine

  • your dashboard coolant light is on

  • your coolant reservoir is old or dirty

  • you don’t know when the last Coolant flush was performed

Should You Use Audi OEM Coolant for Your A4, Q5, or Q7?

Sure, you could put any old coolant in your car. It may or may not work, for a while. The only way to be sure you are doing everything you can to ensure your engine’s health is to use coolant from the original equipment manufacturer (OEM). Go straight to the source. That’s why we recommend you take full advantage of the knowledge and expertise that our certified Audi mechanics exude.

Audi coolant was designed explicitly for your Audi. Our experts recommend either G12 EVO Coolant Antifreeze 50/50 Ready to Use or G13, which we have ready for your Audi.

So what happens if you use an aftermarket, non-OEM coolant?

Your engine’s components could malfunction, corrode, and deteriorate much faster than if you used an OEM coolant. For good measure, here are a few more reasons why you should use only OEM Audi coolant:

  • OEM coolant is more stable during heavy usage

  • Audi OEM coolant is engineered for long-term performance

  • Your Warranty may require it

  • Aftermarket coolant can come pre-mixed (diluted)

  • Audi OEM coolant is designed to work with metal, rubber, and plastic components specific to the cooling system inside your Audi vehicle’s engine

Are Coolant and Antifreeze the Same Thing?

Technically, no. Antifreeze and coolant are not identical.

In order for antifreeze to become coolant for your vehicle, it must be mixed (diluted) with distilled water because antifreeze is concentrated. Do you know the correct ratio of antifreeze to distilled water?

Does this question conjure a younger you back in high school chemistry on lab day in nostril-crushing goggles, a dingy white coat, and a black solid epoxy resin table with wooden legs beneath your glass beaker, staring back at you as you nervously search for the nearest fire alarm?

If this is you, better leave the mixing to the Audi service experts at Fletcher Jones Audi. If you’re just looking to purchase the correct Audi coolant for your A4, Q5, or Q7, a service rep can help you. Contact us today or stop by to chat about your Audi coolant system in person. We’re located at 949 North Elston Suite 1, Chicago, IL 60642.
